Michelle DeRobertis


Founding Principal

MIchelle DeRobertis P.E., Ph.D. is a licensed Civil and Traffic Engineer in California specializing in bicycle, pedestrian and sustainable transportation issues. She holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and a M.S. in Transportation Engineering, both from the University of California at Berkeley.  In 2019 she received a  PhD from the University of Brescia, Italy. At TCSC, she is both a Principal and founding Board Member. 

Michelle was a transportation engineering consultant for over twenty years managing non-motorized and traffic calming projects in California as well as in Charlotte NC, Chicago IL and Lima Peru. She then spent ten years in the public sector before entering the PhD program to research traffic limited zones in Italy. After receiving her Ph.D., she then turned her attention to livable cities and public transportation policy, leading several research projects. She is currently serving as Editor of World Transport Policy & Practice and a Research Associate with Mineta Transportation Institute at San José State University, California.

Other professional activities include: guest lecturer at graduate courses at U.C. Berkeley and San Jose State University in City and Regional Planning;  longtime Instructor for U.C. Berkeley’s Institute of Transportation Studies Technology Transfer Program, and founding member of the Bicycle Technical Committee which advises the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. In 2009, she received a fellowship from the German Marshall Fund to study TOD and land use in Italy and Germany.
